Canon Oceania has published its 2022 Sustainability Report, detailing how the company has delivered on its annual sustainability objectives - including a circular economy initiative that saw seven tonnes of toner waste reused in 187 kilometres of Australian roads.

 Every three-to-four years, Canon Oceania Group conducts a comprehensive materiality assessment to help determine the most important economic, social and environmental issues to the business and its communities, with this most recent assessment being the first since the pandemic. Through the qualitative and quantitative approach, Canon Oceania identified the following six material issues critical to our sustainability: 

1.Responding to the global net zero imperative; 
2.Strengthening Canon products and services through circular economy innovation;
3.Building an authentic, diverse, and inclusive culture; 
4.Securing resilient supply chains; 
5.Transforming business operations through digitalisation; and, 
6.Collaborating with partners to enhance the customer experience. 

The areas of social, environmental and technology were determined as areas of focus for Canon Oceania’s initiatives and programs to address the key issues. Canon Oceania’s 2022 sustainability commitment highlights include:  

Social 

Canon Australia achieved full endorsement of its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) by Reconciliation Australia. Canon Oceania published its first Modern Slavery Statement detailing how the Group is addressing potential slavery risks in our supply chain.  
Continued support of Kanlungan sa Er-Ma Ministry (KSEM) Children’s Shelter in Philippines to support children’s education.   

Environmental  

7.3 tonnes of Canon toner, recycled through the Cartridges 4 Planet Ark program, was used in TonerPlas, a high performance award-winning asphalt additive that extends the life of asphalt roads. In 2021, TonerPlas was used in 187km of roads.  
Canon New Zealand maintained its Toitū Carbonzero certification and has converted 80 per cent of its fleet to hybrid vehicles. 
Recycling of Canon end-of-life products through the TechCollect program in Australia saved 2,900 tonnes of CO2e as well as reductions in water consumption, energy use and particulates emissions by replacement of virgin material by materials recovered from the e-waste, according to a Lifecycles study.
New printers have been launched with moulded pulp packaging demonstrating Canon’s commitment to remove the use of expanded polystryrene (EPS) in consumer printers by 2023. 

 Technology

Converga and Harbour IT are now combined as one united brand – Canon Business Services Australian and New Zealand – providing a seamless business transformation offering. 
Launch of SUN Editions, a new online fine-art print marketplace connecting art buyers with leading Australian artists.  
The PrintHub collaboration between Canon Business Services Australia and New Zealand, and Canon New Zealand has led to new service supporting company growth and cross-sell strategy.
