Untitled design 69Starting from Elizabeth Quay at around 3am, Wagener is expected to arrive at the Mandurah foreshore around 3pm – 4pm. The journey will take approx. 12+ hours. [Google maps suggests the 72.9 kilometre walk can take 15 hours].

Wagener was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia in February 2020 after his annual general health check found an elevated white blood cell count. He had no symptoms at the time.

“I’m grateful to know about it now before symptoms start and because we found it early, we can monitor it. It just highlights how important it is to get general health checks every year.”

He’s aiming to raise $100,000 to support the Leukaemia Foundation’s research into finding a cure for the condition. “I am fundraising to help the 47 Australians who will know that they have blood cancer by the end of today — and for the 47 families who will face the same devastating news tomorrow.

“It’s a long walk, but it’s important to get the message out there. Most people wouldn’t even know they had leukaemia until it’s too late. Early intervention is the key.”

Leukaemia is a form of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. There are numerous kinds of Leukaemia, some slow growing, and others very aggressive. Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia is slow growing, and if detected early, treatment may not be needed for some time. The key to all cancers is early diagnosis.
