The billboard is part of a global initiative to encourage innovation in sustainability.

Positioned on three sides of a building in North Sydney, NSW, it uses new technology driven by 96 solar panels that generate power that is stored onto 48 batteries onsite, and act as the only source of power for the sign. When the batteries run out of power, the Ricoh sign will not light, nor will it ever use any power from the grid.

The video above relates to the New York billboard that is powered by solar and wind.

By using only solar power to run the sign, Ricoh is demonstrating its long-term commitment to contributing to a sustainable society by conserving the energy which is required to illuminate conventional electric signs and reducing carbon emissions.

The Ricoh eco billboard is the first of its type in Australia, as it is the only large format LED eco billboard that is 100% solar powered from electricity generated on site. It uses low emission LED technology, compared to older neon sign illumination seen on most similar signs, which equates to a savings of 17 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year*.

The Sydney eco billboard is one of Ricoh’s three completely sustainable eco billboards in the world. The other two eco billboards are located in New York’s Times Square and in London.

Ricoh partnered with a local supplier to develop and install the first-of-its-kind eco billboard, which is located next to the Warringah Freeway – the gateway to Sydney over the Harbour bridge.
