Copyright issues and managing a multi generational workforce in the printing industry will feature at a special briefing in Sydney on Friday this week.

The Printing Industries’ briefing aims to help business owners and managers keep on top of many diverse and often complex commercial and legal issues that have an impact on their businesses bottom line.

Printing Industries National Manager Employee Relations, OH&S and Legal, Charles Watson, said that company managers were expected to be have an understanding of an increasingly complex array of issues reflecting changing workforce dynamics and legal matters affecting their handling of digital data.

“In times gone by staff management was less complex and outputting client work was more process driven. But times have changed,” Mr Watson said.

“The workforce makeup has significantly altered and with this a new raft of requirements and skills management is needed by managers.

“On the production front, digital data management, while creating more opportunities with how it can be used and communicated, also creates problems with the management of intellectual property, for example, with copyright ownership and approval for specific purpose.

“Printing company managers, sales, marketing and human resource managers may find themselves in challenging and potentially legally costly situations brought about by their routine customer dealings and therefore need to be prepared to manage this.”

Mr Watson said the breakfast briefing would focus on providing guidance from leading legal and human resource practitioners.

The session will feature Phillippa Bergin, a solicitor with the Freehills international law firm, Commercial Litigation group, specialising in intellectual property, trade practices and commercial litigation.

She has extensive experience advising on a wide range of intellectual property issues, including copyright, trademarks, confidential information, patents and designs. Ms Bergin also has experience in advertising and consumer protection matters and will give an overview of intellectual property issues that affect the printing industry.

Tracy McClenaghan is an associate director with one of Australia’s leading consultancy agencies and will discuss Managing the multi-generational workforce. Her focus is on exploiting stereotypes and the differing views of cross generational workplaces to make them work better, and importantly, work better together.

Mr Watson, who also has a legal background, will give an overview of employment related and other issues the industry will be facing for the remainder of 2011.

The breakfast briefing will be held from 7.45am on Friday 24 June at the Rydges Hotel Parramatta, 116-118 James Ruse Drive, Rosehill.
